Interview with Seth Celdrán

Who is Seth Celdrán?

Seth Celdrán is a multi-instrumental solo artist whose music is written, produced, performed, and recorded independently from his home in West Virginia. Despite being only seventeen, he is most inspired by his heroes from the golden age of music. Influences from The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and Elton John are clearly present in his latest work. Seth finds a lot of inspiration from contemporary bedroom pop and Indie artists like Dayglow, as well as popular artists like Harry Styles.

The Interview

Who are your favorite artists?

My music is very much inspired by artists from the 60’s and 70’s. The Beatles and all their solo careers (especially Paul Mccartney) have the largest influence on me, but I’m also massively inspired by the Rolling Stones, Elton John, David Bowie, The Beach Boys, Carole King, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Queen, Harry Nilsson, Fleetwood Mac. I could go on for days. hopefully these influences show in my music.

Which albums did you listen the most to last year?

Abbey Road is in constant rotation. Harmony House by Dayglow was a huge one for me. Wings at the speed of sound by wings and pet sounds by the Beach Boys were played a lot too.

Who is your biggest artistic influence?

Again, The Beatles. i’ve pretty much just learned how to write songs by analyzing their music for years.

When and why have you started doing music?

I started music when I was about 7. My grandpa was a big reason why i was into music. He played guitar and I loved hearing him mess around on his martin when I would come over as a child.

What message do you want to convey to your listeners with your songs?

Just be yourself. I still struggle with being completely open, but allowing myself to be more expressive has been really liberating. Music has helped me with that tremendously.

Who would you love to collaborate with?

I bet you didn’t see this coming, but Paul Mccartney.

Give us some spoilers on your upcoming music.

Lately I’ve been studying my favorite albums from the 60’s and 70’s and have been trying to replicate those sonics and songwriting styles while still adding my own touch to it. My next song is about wishing your circumstances would change instead of being happy with yourself.

Describe yourself in one word.

Oddball. I still haven’t quite figured myself out.

What's the story behind your track "Next to Me"?

Next to Me was the result of me binging love songs from the late sixties and trying to replicate that production style. The lyrics are about my girlfriend. I had an idea of arrangement and the production style going into it. the rest was just about executing that sixties vibe.

Which song was the hardest to write?

Oddly enough, none of the songs i have out were hard to write. the only songs that see the light of day are the ones that just kind of flow out. I usually never finish the songs that are hard to write, which is a bad habit.

What would you like to tell your fans?

I'm not sure I really have “fans” at this stage, but I do appreciate everyone that’s ever engaged with anything I’ve done. if you’ve just left a like on a post, told me you like a song, sent me a message, or shouted my music out, it all means the world to me. at my level, any support I can get does not go unnoticed.

What's your favorite lyrics from your songs?

but still

I feel

like I haven’t even got a name

and no matter how hard i try

something is just missing inside

I feel like those lines hit hard and sum up depression in a concise and interesting way.

What does music mean to you?

It is cliché, but music is everything to me. It has brought me out of dark times and been the soundtrack to some of my happiest moments. music is genuinely the only thing in life that truly makes me feel fulfilled. I have yet to come across anything in life that makes me feel remotely the way that music does. It really is an indescribable feeling.

What is your process when you have an idea for a new song?

I'm a very production-oriented songwriter. I’m always writing with the final picture in mind. I find the best way for me to go about a song is to have it completely written and practiced before I record anything. that way, I know it sounds good stripped back and that I have a clear vision going into the recording and production process.

Thank you for the interview, Seth!
