Liana Flores

Liana Flores was bestowed human form by a kind witch in exchange for these songs (she previously was a tree).

Transformation became the watchword for Liana Flores’ debut album, Flower of the soul, whether it be the changing of the seasons or the evolving nature of love. It’s a theme that can be heard throughout much of the London-based British-Brazilian songwriter's music, which pairs dream-like vignettes of her intimate world with wistful, drifting guitar melodies to get lost in. Written over the course of the past three years, Flower of the soul is a meditation on impermanence, told through an intoxicating blend of stylistic influences, from British folk (‘Crystalline’), classic jazz (‘I wish for the rain’), and ‘60s Brazilian pop (‘Butterflies’) Liana has always had an ear for the special moments in music. Her style finds a musical kinship with the jazz-pop revivalism of artists like Laufey – who she supported on her European tour in 2022 – while sharing the depth and craftsmanship of seasoned songwriters like Vashti Bunyan, Nick Drake and João Gilberto.

press conference

"Enchanting. Jazzy. Fairylike."

Hello again!

Amidst the enchanting atmosphere of summer's embrace, we find ourselves captivated by the alluring tunes of folk-jazz musician Liana Flores.

Liana writes symphonies that elevate our spirits—sometimes lively like the sun, at times gentle with memories, and occasionally veiled in mystery. These varied melodies, blending jazzy nuances in "Flower of the soul," prompt us to see the world with greater sensitivity, inspiring us to value both its hidden wonders and obvious beauty.

Exploring the mysteries of the album "Flower of the soul" alongside Liana, our curiosity knows no bounds. When asked about the plant or flower that symbolises her album the best, Liana suggested that a potato would be suitable because of its nourishing characteristics.

Described as both contemporary and timeless, Liana was questioned about how she manages to respect musical traditions while simultaneously exploring new genre boundaries and crafting innovative work.

Liana:

“… what I settled down at the moment is rather than being from any specific time … it’s like timeless. Because the songs that I like a lot, are songs that could’ve existed at any time.”

Your songwriting paints dream-like scenes. Are there any memories or experiences that have inspired your lyrical imagery?

 Liana:

“That has to be any time that I spend in nature”

Liana loves uncovering nature's beauty through exploration. In her Spotify bio, she shares a delightful tale of becoming human through the kindness of a witch in exchange for her enchanting songs, revealing her past life as a tree.

Here's a special secret just for you: She shared with us that she used to be an old, wise oak tree.

 Liana:

"Trees, to me, symbolize all things rooted, and they’re generous; they give fruit all the time, and there’s a lyric on the album that says

Hear the new bluebird whistle out her first song. From the tree that will be here long after we’re gone

I like that they have been here before us and they will be here afterwards.”

Liana released music videos for "rises the moon" and "I wish for the rain," which captivated everyone with their beauty. Many were curious about the inspiration behind the concepts of these music videos.

Liana:

“Both were inspired by movies."

"rises the moon" was '60s/'70s horror-inspired. There's a movie called "Picnic at Hanging Rock" that was one of the inspirations for it."

"I wish for the rain" was a bit more romantic and inspired by Tim Burton movies.”

The song I wish for the rain would be described as

peaceful, nostalgic, and melodic

Liana drew inspiration for her songwriting from literature, including:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

When we asked her who she would love to collaborate with, she said she would love to do a collaboration with Tim Bernardes (which she did on the track Butterflies) and Clairo.

Liana Flores is truly of an incomparable nature when it comes to weaving songs and revealing the world in its grace.

Her melodies carry listeners to distant dreamscapes where every note paints the colors of the sky and every verse touches the heart. It is as if time stands still and only the music exists, flowing like a gentle river through the souls of the listeners.
